cue to retire, right now

Yoga teachers, here’s a cue I recommend retiring right now.

“Slide your shoulders down your back” sounds helpful, but it often forces students into unnatural movement, restricts shoulder mechanics, and creates unnecessary tension.

Swap it for simple, functional language that helps students feel safe and supported.

“let your shoulders settle into neutral”

“Relax your shoulders away from your ears”

“Create space between your ears and shoulders”

“Allow your collarbones to widen”

Why this matters:

  • Safeer movement patterns

  • Better alignment through function

  • More awareness / less overthinking

  • Students feeling confident in their bodies
